Deer Run Campground to Darlington Shelter

Today was a treat. We had a fun little group in our cabin last night.

A long day today so we still got going pretty early. Hiked through the Cumberland Valley,  so 17 miles of the trail today was flat and skirted around fields and through patches of honeysuckle. After 8 miles we came to the adorable town of Boiling Springs, PA. I had no expectations but it was awesome. In the center of town is a shallow spring fed pond.
Lots of great old buildings. Got lucky and hit Foundry Day(the town has history in the iron industry)  and there is an Appalachian Trail regional office there.
We hung out at the office for a little while and met some more thru hikers that we hadn't met.
Spiderman, Lyons, me and Criocs.
Then we went and enjoyed some tasty fest food. The only disappointment of the day is that there were no funnel cakes :(
BUT we did get to meet this handsome fellow. A face only a mother could love!

Finally forced ourselves to get walking again because we had another 14 miles to go.
Hiked about 4 more miles and came to
Which led to a cooler in a nearby yard full of cold sodas and beer. We ran in to Big Spoon and Toast there.
Had a soda (wanted a beer but still 10 more miles to go) and headed out.
This is what the trail looked like much of today. Probably our easiest walk of the entire journey.
Eventually , we had crossed the whole valley and we started climbing again. Came to this overlook. The mountains in the distance are where we started this morning.
The day ended with a great group at the shelter. Toast and Big Spoon got out their  banjo and fiddle and were joined by Mando and his mandolin and we were treated to an impromptu concert. We all felt very fortunate to be right where we were.
