South Arm Road to Sabbath Day Pond

Long mileage day today by Maine standards. 17 miles. A few states ago, that would have been an easy day! The muck in Maine is the muckiest muck we've encountered. There are spots on the trail where you just can't avoid it. You try to step on a teetering log in the middle of the muck and end up knee deep in goo. We heard tell of someone sinking in chest deep yesterday.
Started out the morning with a climb up Old Blue and it was chilly!
There wasn't much easy walking today. We just took short breaks and kept a steady pace. There were some beautiful views  and we savoured the warm, sunshine. Looks like some good weather days ahead.
We got to the shelter at about 7:00. Briefly considered sleeping in the shelter but it was already full. Of SOBO's. As we walked up to check it out, another NOBO was setting up his tent, and said, "the shelter is full of southbounders. They can't be trusted." We all laughed. As I mentioned, it's a really interesting dynamic.
Ended the day by Sabbath Day Pond.
Ate a quick dinner and early to bed. (Nothing new there) relatively short day tomorrow in to Rangely.
