Road trip

Rented a car this morning in Bishop for the drive north. It took us about 3.5 hours to drive what will take about 3 weeks to walk. If that's not proof that...
Then I don't know what is.
We got on the road and first stop was Tuolemne Meadows in Yosemite, to pick up care packages from home.
Thanks Mom and Dad for all the good stuff!!
Yosemite is probably my favorite of our incredible national parks. It is amazing and it was still covered in feet of snow, melting fast. Streams were very high. We will be back down through here later this summer when water is hopefully way down.
It was a pretty quiet drive for many reasons. We knew it was our last day for the three of us to be together and it felt weird to be driving north. Until....
I wouldn't call it divine intervention, but maybe techno intervention...
I plugged my phone in to charge in the car and suddenly 'ABC' by the Jackson 5 burst through the sound system. That started a whole car karaoke extravaganza. Everything from Motown, to country, and even a little Christmas :)
Drove on and ended up in South Lake Tahoe. Stopped to sit by the lake and got some ice cream.
Turns out the ice cream guy 'Friz' thru-hiked the AT in 1999 so he loaded us up! Tomorrow morning, we will get organized, drive about 15 miles to Echo Lake to start the march north again.
Movin On is going to drive up and run a marathon around Mount Hood before heading home to North Carolina.  She is bad ass!
Since we will won't be back in the Sierras where bear canisters are required, for quite awhile....(like 1500 miles) we left our bear canisters in Bishop with Heidi. The less weight the better!

  1. I'm sorry the trio is about to become a duo but what a great time you've had! You two will carry on in her honor. With my feet up coffee in hand, reading about those crossings was pretty stressful. (-: I'm glad you made the decision to jump ahead and come back later. Geez....I sound like I'm your mother. Hike on!

    1. Haha. The last two were really scary! And now there are more warnings because the snow melt is just getting started! Sierras will be a cool place to finish!
It will be weird to lose Movin On but this last week she got really quiet so wasn't a total surprise. Her daughter found out she's pregnant and she wants to go home and focus on family stuff for now

    2. Awww. A little one on the way will be fun for her! I cracked up that she decided before she went home she'd just fit in a marathon. She is a badass!
