Chilly campsite to Big Bear Lake

Really great camping spot last night but dang...it was cold this morning!! Got packed up early and it was warm and sunny in about 30 minutes. This trail is a trail of opposites! Snow/desert. Hot/cold.  Flat/mountains. Things change quickly.
A little more on the water situation out here. Last week we passed Tule Spring with abundant water. We filled up, because the next two water possibilities were the underground cistern and the empty water cache. Well, now we hear from the hikers behind us that Tule Spring   Is dry. Water is definitely not something to be taken lightly out here. Today we hiked in to Big Bear Lake.
The flat brown area in this photo used to be Big Bear Lake with some beautiful 'lake front' homes. The drought is really devastating. There was some water in parts of the lake but it's definitely much smaller.
Hiked to where the trail crosses highway 18 into Big Bear Lake. It took us a while to catch a ride, so...
I blocked the road. Ha! Just kiddin' mom :). Eventually, the wife of a hiker named Camper Dan came by in her camper and gave us a ride into Big Bear Lake. Cute little ski town.
And here we ran into another AT friend, Pippin.
So fun to see him. He did the PCT last year, and is out here training for the CDT this year. Don't judge my fashionable outfit here :) It was laundry time!
Met with Pip and Porcupine for pizza for dinner. Porcupine told a terrifying story of cowboy camping in the desert and waking up with two rattlesnakes curled up on his chest. 😳. Which is why I will NOT EVER cowboy camp in the desert. I make sure my tent is zipped up tight each and every time I climb in and out. Hike out tomorrow and the next town seems to be Wrightwood in about 100 miles. Savoring a night of being clean. It's a fleeting feeling.
