Last night in the shelter....
So, four of us were up in the loft at the shelter and it was pouring rain, so we were happy to be there! Downstairs were about 7 or 8 other hikers. Keep in mind, this is a three-sided structure. So, things got quiet and all were asleep, when suddenly someone downstairs yelled,"Bear!!!!" and all hell broke loose. Screaming, headlamps flashing, arms flailing, total pandemonium. Turns out, someone apparently dreamed they were being attacked by a bear ( no one would lay claim to starting the mayhem this morning) and it was just a chain reaction. Well, we started laughing, and I mean, uncontrollable, tears-running-down-our faces laughing. And it went on and on and on. Just when everyone would get settled down, someone would bust out again and it would start all over. That kind of laughter doesn't happen often enough and it is good for the soul!
We were on the trail by 6 this morning because we were heading to town for showers/food/laundry etc (you know the drill by now) Despite the rain, the trail was pretty nice. I took off full speed and even ran a little bit. I just wanted to get to the road and in to the sun and out of the green tunnel for awhile.
Here is some of the muddy, mucky trail...
As I was moving along, I encountered Warren Doyle again. This time, since I knew who he was, I introduced myself. Another life lesson about not judging based on hearsay... He sat down on a rock and we had a lovely, one-on-one conversation. He was pleasant, positive and encouraging. Maybe one of these days that lesson will stick with me.
Got to the road, where a woman from town was just dropping off another hiker, so we jumped in the car(with her permission of course). Ate big food, resupplied and headed to the Green Mountain Hostel for the night. It is lovely, clean, well-run and very reasonable. Feeling clean and rested. Quite a contrast to yesterday. Really enjoyed some down time. Back out tomorrow with rain in the forecast.
